Why I chose to study Japanese

I want to learn Japanese because I am interested in the Japanese culture. Learning a new language is always exciting, and the similarities I could find between Japanese and Chinese are very interesting. After the first four week of Japanese class, I found that the most challenging part of learning Japanese is the differentiation between similar vowels, for example: "ka" and "ga", "to" and "do" etc.

  1. Thanks for sharing. Yes, indeed, there are some similarities between Japanese and Chinese. Also, I guess it's very interesting to know the Japanese meanings of Kanji characters, which are sometimes quite different from the Chinese ones. (This is what I myself found exciting when learning Chinese). Hope you enjoy the rest of Japanese courses:) TA:Hori

    1. You are so right Hori! Actually my chinese background helped me a lot in learning not only the Kanji but also some other subtle similarities between the two languages.

  2. Yes, I agree that the most challenging part of learning both Japanese and Chinese is differentiating similar vowels, and I think that's the reason why I really gave up on studying Chinese. But I hope we both hang in there in learning Japanese and get over it! がんばれ

    1. Even though my native language is Chinese, I agree that learning to write all the characters in Chinese would be very tough. Hope you are doing well in the Japanese class. いっしょにがんばりましょう!

  3. チェリーさん、こんにちは。チャン・ウェイです。はじめまして。
I'm Taiwanese and Chinese is my native language. I also found that although knowing Chinese often times helps me to memorize Japanese vocabularies, the similarities between these two languages sometimes really confuse me. But I think we both have to learn how to enjoy the interesting parts and overcome the difficult parts in learning Japanese! こちらこそよろしくおねがいします。

    1. Yes. Even though there are some confusing parts in learning a language, but I guess we are having fun. And I'm sure that the advantages of knowing Chinese outweigh the confusions caused by the similarities between the two languages.

  4. I could see how similar vowels would make learning a language hard. Are there any similarities that make learning Japanese less difficult?

    1. In Japanese, there are only 5 vowels to master. Whereas North American Standard English, we have 14 vowels... So if you know how to speak English, you will be able to master Japanese vowels since the 5 vowels are already included in the NASE :) Practice makes perfect! TA Yoshikawa
